The terms such as eco-fashion, ethical-fashion, organic-fashion, green-fashion and even at times vegan-fashion are used in conjunction with sustainable fashion.

What is slow fashion?

The "slow movement" advocates manufacturing with respect to people, environment and animals. Contrary to industrial fashion practices, slow fashion involves local artisans and the use of eco-friendly materials, with the goal of preserving crafts and the environment and, ultimately, provide value to both consumers and producers.

What is ethical fashion and ethical brand?

What is vegan fashion and vegan bags?

Vegan fashion is fashion made from materials that don’t involve any animals or animal derived products. This means that no animal leather, fur or suede is used. It also means that the glue used to make the products is free from animal ingredients and the treads are free from animal derived dyes.

In the same vein, Vegan bags are made from fabric that is not derived from animals. Most commonly used materials in vegan fashion are PVC and PU which come from the crude chain and involve a very chemically intensive manufacturing process.

There is now a conscious shift to more sustainably made fabrics that are plant-based. These include mushroom skins, cork fabric, leaf leather, paper, cactus, coconut fiber and pineapple.

Are vegan bags the same as eco bags?

Vegan bags are generally referred to as eco-friendly bags because they are made using fabrics that are relatively more environmentally friendly as compared to traditional leather. What is the difference between vegan and cruelty-free?

In the beauty industry, the label “cruelty-free” is used to imply that a product and its ingredients were not tested on animals. Whereas, the label “vegan” is used to refer to a product that does not contain animal products or ingredients.

What is teak leaf fabric?

Teak leaf leather is a leather like fabric created from ‘teak leaves’. Fallen/ mature teak leaves are taken and soaked in water solution to make it flexible. After this they are arranged into sheets and sun dried and then reinforced on a fabric backing.

Your teak-leaf leather bag is water resistant. It is not water proof.

What is the after care required for teak-leaf leather?

Your teak leaf leather bag is water-resistant. It should not accumulate mould in humid conditions. You can wipe it with a damp cloth in case it does.

Why is there a colour difference between the product online and the product I received?

The colour of the product varies with the age of the leaf used to manufacture it. A product made using a mature leaf will look slightly darker than a product manufactured using a young leaf. We try to use minimal dyes to rectify this as we believe the slight inconsistency actually brings out the beauty of working with a natural product, handmade product.

Is my bag discoloured?

No, your bag is not discoloured. A leaf is a natural product and is subject to attack by various pests/ insects. Some of the leaves we work with have been partially eaten by insects but we do use these leaves to make our bags. What you think as being discoloured actually bears the story of the leaf’s journey- from falling from a tree to becoming your bag (and being partially eaten in-between)

My bag has reached the end of its life. How best to dispose it off?

At ‘GnL Accessories’ we believe that being eco friendly does not end with manufacturing an eco-friendly product. We would not like to see our products in landfills once you believe it is time to get a new bag or that our product has reached the end of it’s lifecycle. We would encourage you to send the product back to use so that we can recycle the parts that can be recycled and work out how to best dispose the rest. We are a new company but we can assure you that we are working on this aspect and will update our website with details shortly.

What is cork fabric?

Cork fabric is made from cork oak trees which are over 25 years old and are ready to be ‘harvested’. After being left for over 6 months to dry out, this precise process continues with steaming and boiling the material for extra elasticity. The oak tree trunk regrows and harvesting the tree actually increases it’s lifespan.

Where are the cork fabric bags manufactured?

Our cork fabric is manufactured by our partner in Dongguan, China. The company imports the cork bark from Portugal and then converts it into cork fabric. It follows ethical manufacturing practices and have manufactured cork fabric for our bags using a ‘water PU’ backing which is relatively more environmentally friendly as the chemicals used to manufacture this kind of PU are relatively lesser.

Is cork fabric bio-degradable?

Cork Fabric is a 100% biodegradable. The fabric backing used is generally a mix of cotton and polyurethane. These are not biodegradable. We have however used a backing of water PU to manufacture our fabric. Water PU is more environmentally friendly and the use of chemicals in the manufacturing process is lower.

Is cork fabric water-proof?

Cork fabric cannot be washed, but it will be not effected by rainwater. You just need to wipe and dry it when it is wet.

What is the after care required for cork fabric?

Cork Fabric can catch mould. You can wipe it with a damp cloth in case it does. When it is dirty, just need to wipe it with a special paper as 4th attached. We use this paper to polish as well.
